Norbert Servos

Born near Cologne studied classical ballet and contemporary dance as well as theater, film and television, German and philosophy. He worked as dramatic adviser, assistant producer, lecturer and publisher's reader. He was a co-founder of the magazine “Ballett international” and for seven years a member of the editorial board. Within this time the magazine was developed to the leading dance magazine in Europe. In 1983 he founded his own dance company creating pieces like “Ich trage das Herz nicht in mir”; “Königskinder”; “Schiffeversenken” and “Sisyphos” and as guest choreographer for the opera in Cairo “Gilgamesch” and “Fire Fell into the Heart”.  He is working as a freeelance choreographer and writer with 16 books on Pina Bausch and the development of German Dance Theater as well as poetry. He choreographed more than 20 dance pieces in Germany and abroad which were invited to international dance festivals. Besides his choreographic work he is a guest teacher and lecturer for contemporary dance and choreography.

In 1993 he founded DanceLab Berlin at the Academy of Arts. For DanceLab he created numerous pieces, among others “Solo Solo”; “Events in a dense Fog”; “Songs”; “Who will forget the words”; “Skinned Songs”; “Crumbling Stunts”; “Weiss und Rot”; “Untitled Letter”; “Ne me quitte pas” and the prize winning dance film “Elements of Mine” for Arte/NDR which was shown in most of the international dance film festivals.

His latest publications are “Schritte verfolgen - Die Tänzerin und Choreographin Susanne Linke”; “Solange man unterwegs ist - Die Tänzerin und Choreographin Reinhild Hoffmann” and “Pina Bausch - Dance Theatre”, all at K. Kieser Verlag, Munich. In 2010 he directed together with Eva-Maria Lerchenberg-Thöny the international dance festival “Tanzwelten” in Braunschweig.

Together with Jorge Morro he choreographed for DanceLab Berlin “Solo for a mad King – Cordelia”; “Drink, Smoke – Made in Havana”, co-production with DanzAbierta, Cuba; “Valbarena” for States Theatre Braunschweig; “in\TWO SOLOS”, co-production with Grand Theater Groningen for Noorderzon Festival; “El Circulo Eterno”, co-production with Teatros del Canal, Madrid and “H.K. - Quintett” - A project of TANZFONDS ERBE.

Norbert Servos was for more than 30 years a personal associate of Pina Bausch and is an international renown specialist on dance theatre with worldwide publications.
